There is a video making the rounds on social media with Simon Sinek and his perspective on the Millennial generation. Sinek does a great job of unpacking the four major influences on this group and offers some practical advice to corporations on how to support them. Overall I agree with all he had to say, except one thing. Where he places the responsibility.
Several times he states "It's not their fault for the way they are. From a young age their parents said "you can do anything", "you win a ribbon ... even for last place", and "let's go see your teacher and change your grade to B+". They had bad parenting, they were dealt a bad hand" and then he states, "...it's now the companies responsibility" to pick up the slack, to carry the day, to help them grow up "sucks to be you" he notes. He offers very practical tips on how this can be done and frankly I agree with his thoughts, but here's the rub. Not once does he put any onus of responsibility back on the millennials. Not once does he suggest that they need to start to make changes as well.
The Millennial generation has so many positive attributes, they are tech savvy, purpose oriented, and passionate. There are millennials who received great parenting, take responsibility for themselves, and are thriving in the marketplace today. I know a lot of them. I also know plenty of people in other generations who need to take responsibility for their actions and don't.
I don't think any generation was perfectly parented or parented perfectly (that definition seems to be a moving target). But those that thrive, despite their parenting, own their actions and develop their emotional intelligence.
My simple message for this new year is to own your development. No resolution will change you if you don't own it. As the philosopher Michael Jackson said,
